”Trump’s unilateralism is a savage world — but there is no going back to a US-dictated and Eurocentric multilateral order that was always systematically biased against the Global South behind a façade of liberal democracy.” — Walden Bello

The era of globalisation and neoliberalism, which emphasised freedom of the market and liberal democracy, is over. It has been followed by Trump-style, unilateral use of power, trade wars, and rising nationalism. What will happen to the global south, social movements, and the idea of freedom when the waning dominance of the United States is replaced by something harsher and more ruthless?

Filipino researcher-activist and University of Helsinki Honorary Doctor Walden Bello is one of the sharpest critics of global capitalism. He discusses with University of Jyväskylä lecturer Bonn Juego what went wrong and what a truly free world could look like.

The programme is in English. You can watch the programme at the festival’s Speaker’s Stage at Bio Rex or via livestream on the festival’s website.
